Dana Unsure Where Ferguson Fits in Title Picture
UFC 236’s main event will see an interim lightweight champion be crowned when featherweight champion Max Holloway moves up a weight class to face the man who handed him his first professional loss, Dustin Poirier.
But where does this leave Tony Ferguson, who is currently the No. 1 ranked lightweight contender in the UFC rankings and was the interim champion at one point? At the UFC 236 press conference, UFC President Dana White said he isn’t sure what’s next for Ferguson but that he is to blame for not being in the interim title fight.
White claims that Ferguson was offered both Holloway and Poirier as opponents for an interim lightweight title fight but declined both, refusing to settle anything less than a bout with the currently suspended lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov or the also suspended Conor McGregor.
“I say all the time: When there’s an opportunity, take it,” White said. “I don’t know where this leaves Tony.
“Tony didn’t want the fight. It’s the fight I wanted [with Poirier]. We even tried to make the fight [with Holloway], and he didn’t want it. You can’t make anybody fight.”
UFC 236 takes place on April 13 from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The co-main event will also be an interim title fight, as Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya collide over the interim middleweight title.
