Dana White Confirms Brian Ortega vs. Korean Zombie Is Number One Contender Fight
UFC President Dana White has confirmed that the winner of Brian Ortega vs. Chan Sung Jung will receive a UFC Featherweight Title opportunity.
On Saturday night, October 17, UFC Fight Island 6 will take place inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Ortega and Jung will collide in the main event. This will be Ortega’s first bout since December 8, 2018.
Ahead of the fight, White spoke to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. During the interview, White revealed that Ortega vs. Jung will be a number one contender bout (h/t Bloody Elbow).
“It’s absolutely the No. 1 contender fight. First of all, this is the fight that should have happened a while ago. We’re finally here. With all the crazy stuff that’s happened — and crazy things have always happened in this business — for us to finally be here with The Zombie versus Ortega. Absolutely the winner of this fight should get the next title shot.”
Jung has won his last two outings. He has defeated Frankie Edgar and Renato Moicano. Both bouts ended in a first-round TKO win for the “Korean Zombie.”
Ortega was defeated for the first time in his pro MMA career against Max Holloway. The bout was contested for the UFC Featherweight Championship. “T-City” is hoping to earn another crack at the 145-pound gold. This time, the champion is Alex Volkanovski.
UFC Fight Island 6 will also feature Katlyn Chookagian vs. Jessica Andrade in the co-main event spot. The initial co-headliner was set to be Ciryl Gane vs. Ante Delija but contract issues on Delija’s end forced a change.
