Dana White Open To Booking Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa But Not For Interim UFC Gold
UFC President Dana White isn’t opposed to booking Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa but don’t expect a title to be on the line.
Whittaker and Costa both suffered TKO losses against current UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya. Whittaker bounced back with a unanimous decision victory over Jared Cannonier. Costa hasn’t competed since the defeat to Adesanya.
White was interviewed by The Mac Life and he revealed that Costa’s team has been badgering him to get the Whittaker fight. The UFC boss likes the idea of that matchup (via BJPenn.com).
“Well, I can tell you Paulo Costa and his team are terrorizing us to make that fight. I would make that fight though. Yeah, I would make that fight.”
When asked whether or not an interim UFC Middleweight Title would be up for grabs, White kept his answer short and sweet.
Adesanya is moving up to the light heavyweight division to challenge Jan Blachowicz for the UFC 205-pound gold. He is gunning for “champ-champ” status but the question is, what happens if “The Last Stylebender” wins? At that point, Adesanya would have to decide whether he wants to defend both titles or stick with one.
Thus far, Amanda Nunes is the only fighter to successfully defend two UFC titles while reigning as a “champ-champ.”
