Dana White Reacts To Aljamain Sterling’s DQ Win Over Petr Yan At UFC 259

UFC President Dana White has given his take on the anti-climatic ending to the bantamweight title fight between Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan.

Sterling challenged Yan for the 135-pound gold. “The Funk Master” was effective early on with his pressure mixing in strikes and takedown attempts. His energy began to fade and Yan appeared as if he was starting to take over. Disaster struck in the fourth round when Yan landed a knee to the head of Sterling while he was down, which is illegal.

Sterling could not continue and as a result of the intentional foul, he was declared the winner and awarded the UFC Bantamweight Championship.

During a talk with media members, White discussed the ending to Sterling vs. Yan (via BJPenn.com).

“Yeah, it sucked. It was a good fight. I mean, that was a fight that everybody was excited about tonight and everyone knew it was going to be good, and yeah, that’s a bad one.”

The UFC boss went on to say that he expects to quickly book a rematch.

“Yeah, as soon as possible. Aljo went to the hospital and he’s cleared. Nothing wrong with him.”

After the fight, Sterling hopped on Twitter to issue the following brief statement.

“Not the way I ever want to win a fight. It was close, competitive, and filled with action. I felt the knee was intentional, especially after the ref announced I was a downed opponent, so I didn’t expect to be hit. Yan is a bad dude! WE WILL DO IT AGAIN!”

Yan was apologetic in his Twitter post over the foul that cost him the UFC Bantamweight Title.

“I apologize and wish a speedy recovery to Aljamain Sterling. I didn’t mean to throw an illegal strike, I just made a big mistake and paid for it.”
