Dana White Recalls Speaking To Michael Chandler For The First Time
UFC President Dana White has recounted the time he first spoke to Michael Chandler.
Chandler is one of the UFC’s newest free agency signings. Chandler is a former three-time Bellator Lightweight Champion. He will be on standby for the main event of UFC 254. Headlining that card is scheduled to be Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Justin Gaethje for the undisputed UFC Lightweight Championship.
During an interview with BT Sport, White discussed his first conversion with Chandler. The UFC boss admits he was immediately sold (via BJPenn.com).
“Another great kid. Loved talking to this kid on the phone. He and I talked on the phone one time. I was taking off into the air on a plane and he and I talked for five minutes. I hung up the phone, I called my lawyer, and I said, ‘I don’t care what it takes, sign this kid. I want him. I like him and I want him.’ We talked for five minutes on the phone. That’s all I needed to do, was hear him for five minutes. What a great, great kid this kid is.”
Chandler is fresh off his first-round knockout victory over former UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson. Chandler has won his last two outings. Before the rematch with Henderson, Chandler defeated Sidney Outlaw via first-round knockout.
Many have wondered how Chandler will fare against elite UFC lightweights. We won’t have to wait long to find out. In fact, it’ll happen if either Nurmagomedov or Gaethje is removed from the UFC 254 card this weekend.
