Dana White Thinks He Can Convince Khabib Nurmagomedov To Return
UFC President Dana White believes he can have a chat with Khabib Nurmagomedov and convince him to get back inside the Octagon.
Nurmagomedov announced his retirement following a stellar performance against Justin Gaethje. “The Eagle” successfully retained the UFC Lightweight Championship by scoring a second-round submission finish over Gaethje via triangle choke.
Khabib said his reason for retiring has to do with the wishes of his mother, who doesn’t want him to keep fighting without his late father, Abdulmanap. White has expressed his belief that Nurmagomedov made the retirement announcement in the heat of the moment.
During an interview with BT Sport, the UFC boss explained why he thinks he can get Khabib back inside the Octagon (via MMAJunkie.com).
“I think his dad wanting him to get to 30-0 is in the back of his mind, and he wants to achieve that because he knew his father wanted it. But we’ll see. Him and I are getting together next month and talk. He might not want to fight, I don’t know the answer to that. But I’m a little confident that I can talk him into it.”
White still hasn’t stripped Khabib of the 155-pound gold. Nurmagomedov has told reporters in Russia that he will not return to MMA competition unless he gets his mother’s blessing.
Nurmagomedov’s record stands at a perfect 29-0. Many believe that if he fights one more time, it would be against UFC Hall of Fame elect Georges St-Pierre. Of course, White also knows how lucrative a rematch between Khabib and Conor McGregor would be. “The Eagle” has said that he doesn’t think a second bout with the “Notorious” one makes sense.
