Dana White Thinks Khabib Nurmagomedov Is Pound-For-Pound King If He Beats Justin Gaethje
UFC President Dana White feels Khabib Nurmagomedov can lay claim to being the best MMA fighter in the world if he can defeat Justin Gaethje.
Nurmagomedov and Gaethje will collide in the main event of UFC 254 this Saturday, October 24. This will be a title unification bout as Nurmagomedov is the main lightweight champion, while Gaethje holds the interim gold. The action will be held inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. While rumors swirled regarding potentially allowing fans in the building, that will not be the case.
With a record of 28-0, it’s no secret that Nurmagomedov is considered to be one of the best fighters in MMA today. While most have Jon Jones at the very top of the list, White thinks Nurmagomedov will take that spot if he gets past Gaethje (h/t MMAFighting.com).
“Khabib is looking down the barrel of not only the greatest to ever do it in this division, but listen, I think if he beats Justin on Saturday, he’s the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world and he’s on his way to GOAT status. You know what I think of Jon Jones and we always talk about what Jon’s accomplished in his career. Look at how many fights this guy has and he’s still undefeated, and this is a nasty, nasty weight division.”
Nurmagomedov is going into his third title defense. He was successful in retaining his gold against Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor. “The Eagle” submitted both “The Diamond” and the “Notorious” one.
Gaethje has a four-fight winning streak going for him. He’s stopped all of his opponents in that span. Gaethje’s list of victims include Tony Ferguson, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, Edson Barboza, and James Vick. “The Highlight” snapped Ferguson’s 12-fight winning streak. “El Cucuy” hadn’t suffered a loss since May 2012 against Michael Johnson.
