Daniel Cormier Advises Jon Jones To Fight Israel Adesanya Soon
Former UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier thinks Jon Jones would be wise to fight Israel Adesanya as soon as possible.
Jones and Adesanya have been trading barbs for over a year. Things have even gotten personal between the two with Adesanya saying Jones’ mother, who passed away in 2017, would be ashamed of who he has become. With the bad blood between Jones and Adesanya lingering, many have wondered when the two will finally collide inside the Octagon.
Cormier weighed in on the personal jabs hurled between Jones and Adesanya during a media scrum in Abu Dhabi. “DC” said if Jones were wise, he’d go for a bout with Adesanya before he ups his game even further (via MMAFighting.com).
“I hope they fight at some point. I think it’s a very interesting matchup and I think that Adesanya is just improving every time out. So if I’m Jones I’m fighting him sooner than later if I can get him in there. Because remember, [Adesanya’s] only been here for a couple of years and now he looks like he’s gonna hold the belt forever.”
Adesanya is the reigning UFC Middleweight Champion, while Jones is looking to make the move up to the heavyweight division. “Bones” recently vacated the light heavyweight gold in favor of a change in weight class. There is no word on whether or not Jones will get a UFC Heavyweight Title shot right away. Many have been anticipating a title rematch between champion Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou.
As for Adesanya, the UFC has plans for him. If Jared Cannonier defeats Robert Whittaker at UFC 254 on October 24, then he will get the next crack at Adesanya’s 185-pound gold. Adesanya is fresh off a second-round TKO victory over Paulo Costa for his second successful UFC Middleweight Title defense.
