Daniel Cormier: Jon Jones is “Desperate”

Former long-time light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is currently under a 12-month suspension for his failed drug test at UFC 200 last July. But that is not stopping him from attending this weekend’s UFC 210 event bannered by Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson.

Cormier says he even came across posters throughout the streets of Buffalo, New York about Jones’ after-party and media event, which he believed was organized by manager Malki Kawa. For that, the current champion believes “Bones” is showing no remorse about his most recent predicament that hindered them from facing each other for the second time in a highly-anticipated grudge match.

“If I was suspended for anything, especially for something whatever it may have said to be, there’s no way I’m out in public,” Cormier told Ariel Helwani in a pre-fight interview. “I’m staying home, I’d lick my wounds until my suspension is done, and then I’d come back out. But I think that says a lot about your character. Because are you truly sorry for what you did if you’re really still willing to prance around even though you’re still actually under suspension?”

“It doesn’t bother me, I just think he’s desperate,” Cormier continued. “Very desperate. He’s like the old quarterback that was super successful in high school, and he comes back to the parties with his jacket on.”

“You should be fighting here, not hanging around wearing your varsity jacket with your four state championships.”

Talking about his most bitter rival does not necessarily mean “DC” is looking past “Rumble”, whom he believes he had already broken during their first fight almost two years ago.

“Anthony Johnson was ready for me to finish him in the second round (of the first fight),” Cormier said. “The time just ran out. He tried to roll over to his stomach but I wouldn’t let him.”

“Watch it. When I cut him, he tried to roll to his belly and give me his back to choke him out. But I wouldn’t let him. I cross-faced him back down, and I elbowed him some more, time ran out. Third round, he did the same thing. Threw the punches, gave it one last shot to knock me out, and when he realized it wasn’t happening, turned over, gave me his back, and let me choke him.”

UFC 210 will take place on Saturday, April 8th, at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.
