Daniel Cormier Puzzled By Jon Jones’ Response To GOAT Talk
Daniel Cormier doesn’t understand why Jon Jones took issue with Khabib Nurmagomedov’s number one spot on the UFC’s pound-for-pound list.
Nurmagomedov took on Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 254. This was an undisputed lightweight title fight as “The Eagle” was the main champion, while Gaethje was the interim titleholder. Nurmagomedov decimated Gaethje with a second-round submission victory. Nurmagomedov announced his retirement after the fight and requested to be the number one-ranked fighter on the pound-for-pound list. The UFC granted his wish.
Jones took to social media and didn’t appear too happy with the UFC’s move. He wasn’t shy in reminding fans that he has far more title defenses than Nurmagomedov.
During an interview with MMAJunkie.com, Cormier said that Jones simply won’t let his ego go.
“I think the biggest case of that recently was when Khabib was the man and then Jones just kind of lost his mind. It wasn’t about him, so he lost his mind. This guy just had a great performance under the circumstances – lost his father – now everybody is like, ‘This guy’s the best.’ OK, for years people have been saying (Jones) is the best. It should not offend (him) to the point that you feel like you have to go on this tangent and answer pretty much every single tweet.
“How do you answer every tweet sent to you when you have that many followers? I just think sometimes you gotta let go of your ego, read the room, pick your time, and do those things in those moments that are necessary.”
Jones has been preparing for a move to the heavyweight division. He vacated the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. There’s no word on who “Bones'” first opponent at heavyweight will be or when his next outing will take place.
