Daniel Cormier Suggests Jon Jones’ First Heavyweight Opponent
Daniel Cormier has a suggestion for Jon Jones’ first opponent at heavyweight.
Jones is planning to make the move to the heavyweight division. He vacated the UFC Light Heavyweight gold in order to focus on bulking up for the change in weight class. UFC President Dana White says he has yet to speak with Jones on the heavyweight move.
During an edition of the DC & Helwani Show, Cormier shared who he would book Jones against for his heavyweight debut (h/t MMANews.com).
“Jones needs a heavyweight fight. I say move Blaydes to Jones. … It makes all the sense in the world. (If) Jones beats Blaydes, nobody will ever say he doesn’t belong at heavyweight. (If) Blaydes beats Jones, now he has beaten the greatest of all time – in people’s minds – going up to heavyweight. He’ll get his title shot right away.”
Blaydes was scheduled to fight Derrick Lewis in the UFC Vegas 15 main event. Due to a positive COVID-19 test on Blaydes’ end, the bout will now have to be rescheduled. “Razor” is in search of his fifth win in a row.
During an interview with James Lynch, Blaydes said he needs a bump up in pay if he’s expected to fight Jones. “Razor” said a $200,000 payday to share the Octagon with “Bones” simply won’t cut it.
Taking a look at the official UFC heavyweight rankings, Blaydes holds the number two spot. If he can defeat Lewis, then a bout with Jones would almost surely be a number one contender fight.
