Danny Ortega Launches New promotion, Son Matt Griego Headlines First Event
Griego last fought in June and won by UD.
The undefeated Albuquerque boxer Matt Griego-Ortega will be headlining the first show headed by his father’s company, Wrecking Crew Promotions on February 4.
The 26-year-old Griego hasn’t got his career moving as he has fought just 12 times since his debut in 2016. All of his fights ended on a happy note but none of them was convincing as such.
But now he has received a much-needed boost in his father, Danny Ortega stepping into the business of boxing. The older Ortega will have his company, Wrecking Crew Promotions’, first event go down under next month at Revel Entertainment Center in Albuquerque.
The younger Ortega will be fighting in the main event of the night against Bryan Aquino in an eight-round flyweight bout. Griego is confident that he will be much more active than what he has been in all these years.
The Diamond Boy has no intentions of giving up on his boxing career this early.
“It’s been kind of tough for me to keep getting fights, so we’re just gonna try to stay busy and keep New Mexico fighters busy and fighting.” said Griego.
A total of six fights will be contested on the night, with nine out of twelve boxers hailing from New Mexico. Among them is a famous welterweight Josh Torres, who has had a fair bit of experience in fighting at the boxing grandest stage.
He is matched against Houston veteran Todd Manuel in a six-round bout. Unlike Griego, Torres has fought frequently, fighting at least 33 times as a professional and is adamant to go one step further.
“I’m no spring chicken,” Torres said, ”but … even though a lot of fighters are close to the end of their run by the time they’re 33 or 34 years old, as crazy as it sounds, I feel like my career is just getting started.”
The WCP promotion could prove to be a safe haven for the New Mexico fighters as the company intends to promote the indigenous athletes in the future.
