David Benavidez Questions Jermall Charlo’s Intentions To Fight Him
The interim WBC super-middleweight titlist, David Benavidez, is unsure whether Jermall Charlo will move up to 168 to fight him or not, as there has been much speculation recently.
Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) made light work of former IBF middleweight champ, David Lemieux this past Saturday at Gila River Arena, Glendale. The 25-year-old started the fight at a blistering pace, giving no breather to Lemieux who ultimately succumbed to Benavidez in the third round.
In the post-fight ring interview, Benavidez openly called out Charlo and the former P4P king Canelo Alvarez, vowing to give them the same beating as he did to Lemieux if they ever meet in the ring.
“I’m right here waiting for them. I’m not scared of nobody, I’m the youngest guy. Three-time world champion in 168 division, “ said Benavidez in the post-fight interview. “I will put my belts against anybody, and I guarantee you, I knock everybody out.”
Recently, there has been much talk going around regarding the possible Charlo-Benavidez clash at 168 among the boxing community. Charlo himself has also come out on several occasions proclaiming a fight against the undefeated Benavidez in the media.
But the Phoenix native believes that Charlo is just looking to get a big money fight against the Mexican icon, Alvarez without earning the rights for it. Benavidez feels that Charlo will never accept the fight against him as he will have the same fate as the other 26 fighters had.
“I don’t think anything of that until I get the contract and the fight is made,” said Benavidez to Fighthype in response to Charlo saying that he’s going to move up to 168 to fight Benavidez.
“A lot of people say stuff and are forced to say things when the cameras are around, but how many times has he [Charlo] said that, that we were going to fight? A lot of times,” said Benavidez.” I don’t know what he wants. He wants a Canelo fight, but come on, you got to take a big risk to get that big reward.”
Benavidez knows he must fight either Charlo or Plant and win it convincingly to get a shot at Canelo.
“In order to get to the next level, I need [Jermall] Charlo, I need Caleb Plant, and I need Canelo. That’s just the reality of that.”
