David Benavidez Vs. Caleb Plant: Preview And Where To Watch Info

Live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas this Saturday, David Benavidez and Caleb Plant will step into the ring and conclude the months of build up surrounding their interim WBC super middleweight title match.

Between these two top level fighters, there is a thick layer of animosity, which is just one of the many points of motivation behind the eyes of each competitor. This is a grudge match in every sense of the term, every time the pair is in the same room together it feels like something very bad is about to happen.

Saturday night on SHOWTIME Boxing, brought to the fans by Premier Boxing Champions, the grudge between these two former world champions will get settled, and everyone will know who the true number one contender in the super middleweight division is.

Former two-time WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez (26-0, 23 KO) has spent most of his time as a professional boxer on the rise, but no career is true without its share of speed bumps.

In September 2018, it was reported that Benavidez tested positive for cocaine. He was stripped of the WBC title that he had won just one year earlier through a hard fought battle with Ronald Gavril.

After over a year out of the ring, Benavidez returned to face J’Leon Love, and stopped him in the second round. Six months later, he would regain his world title after knocking out Anthony Dirrell in the ninth round of their contest.

Unfortunately, in August 2020, Benavidez once again lost his title, this time due to missing weight prior to his match with Roamer Alexis Angulo. Despite not being eligible to retain his title, Benavidez stopped Angulo in the 10th round of their one-sided affair.

In his next three bouts, “The Mexican Monster” dominated his opponents, and finished David Lemieux in the third round of their 2022 match to once again achieve WBC super middleweight gold.

Stopping the last six competitors to enter the ring with him, Benavidez will look to keep the streak going with a knockout victory over Caleb Plant. He predicts that he will stop Plant by the sixth round, and has said on multiple occasions that he plans to break his opponent’s jaw.

Caleb Plant (22-1, 13 KO) is no stranger to the bright lights of big name matches. After becoming the IBF super middleweight champion back in January 2019, he went on to defend his title three times, before meeting Canelo Alvarez in November 2021.

Despite a valiant effort, Canelo defeated Plant by way of technical knockout in the 11th round of their match. While this loss would slow many boxers down, it seems to have only further motivated Plant, and he has big plans for himself that all start with getting his hand raised this Saturday night.

Plant bounced back in a big way following the Canelo match, with a massive knockout of Anthony Dirrell that sent his opponent to another dimension in the ninth round of their match back in October. Not only was this a great way to come back from his first loss, putting on an excellent display of boxing and showcasing his power in the process, but the left hook to the body followed by a left hook up top that connected cleanly earned him the award of knockout of the year 2022.

It is likely that the winner of this main event will force a mandatory title defense for Canelo, and Plant is itching to get another shot at the undisputed champion. That being said, the fast hands, volume, and punching power of Benavidez is a tall task to overcome.
