David Benavidez Vs. Jose Uzcategui Off After Backlash, Caleb Plant May Be Option

David Benavidez vs Jose Uzcategui is off.

The reason is, reportedly, simple — it received huge backlash from fans. Instead, according to Boxing Scene, Benavidez is in talks to face Caleb Plant for an interim WBC super middleweight bout some time in the first half of 2023.

Benavidez was projected to face Uzacategui in a stay busy fight, but that wasn’t the first time it was targeted to go down.

They were originally supposed to meet last November 13, but Uzcategui tested positive for EPO, which immediately removed him from the matchup.

Then, despite Benavidez seeking top contenders in the division, he and Uzcategui were set up once again, but it doesn’t look like that’ll go through now.

Instead, Benavidez, one of the division’s top talents, is expected to be ordered to fight Plant during the annual WBC convention, which takes place from November 6 to 11.

Plant recently put on a show when he knocked out Anthony Dirrell on the undercard of Deontay Wilder vs Robert Helenius.

Benavidez knocked out David Lemieux in the third round to secure his interim super middleweight title and an eventual mandatory title shot.
