David Benavidez’s Father Doesn’t Want Him To Fight David Morrell Jr.
David Benavidez’s father, Jose Benavidez Sr, is not keen on seeing his son face David Morrell Jr.
This comes on the back end of reports that Benavidez and Morrell Jr. have come to an agreement to fight sometime between October and November, as per the ‘Mexican Monster’s’ promoter Sampson Lewkowicz.
“We have an agreement. This is the plan. We are with the same network. It’s easy to get an agreement. I strongly believe it will be more competitive than it would be with Canelo Alvarez.
“I believe Canelo wouldn’t go past six rounds with Benavidez, and with Morrell,” Lewkowicz
While that may have been the case, Benavidez Sr. has talked up his son facing either Jaime Munguia next, if not, Dmitry Bivol at 175 lbs.
Those fights would prove to be a lower risk, as Munguia is an undefeated Mexican fighter (42-0 with 33KOs), so a loss would not be too damaging, unlike facing Morrell Jr, who only has nine fights.
Not only that, but Morrell Jr.’s last fight was a sensational first-round knockout of Yamaguchi Falcao, as he has stopped all of his opponents except one.
In contrast, Munguia secured an underwhelming victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
Meanwhile, facing Bivol offers the opportunity to be a two-division champion, as a loss would keep Benavidez’s position at 168 lbs intact.
With that being said, this is what Benavidez Sr. had to say.
“I would love to fight David Morrell, but David Morrell is not there yet, in my opinion. He needs a little bit more fans. Maybe like about two or three more fights.
“Does that make sense? But in the future, it will be a big fight, too, but we’ll take him right now. But I think Munguia has the people.
“He’ll steal all the fans from Canelo also by facing David Benavidez. Two great Mexicans going at it. We’ll prove who’s the best Mexican at 168,”
“If that doesn’t happen, I would love to do the revenge against [Dmitry] Bivol,” Jose Benavidez Sr
Despite this being the case, the social media response suggested that Benavidez’s team was looking to avoid Morrell Jr.
