Davis, Santa Cruz Reportedly Set To Clash In The Fall
Two of the top super-featherweights may finally be on their way to face one another.
According to The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger, Leo Santa Cruz and Gervona Davis have agreed to clash. The bout could end up taking place in Southern California and will be a Showtime-produced event. The two were rumored to face one another inside the Staples Center this summer, but the coronavirus pandemic has halted boxing entities from having events.
There has been some interest in a fight between the two before, as they wanted to work something out since December 2019.
Davis (23-0) is the WBA Lightweight Champion. He beat an injured Yuriorkis Gamboa via TKO in December for the vacant title. Before that, He dominated the super-featherweight division, holding onto the WBA and IBF Super-Featherweight Belts.
It is unclear of his fight status as Davis was charged in a domestic violence case that saw him grab the mother of his child. Further video footage was released from the incident, which may not help him in the future.
Cruz (37-1-1) won the WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Championship by beating Miguel Flores via unanimous decision back in November. He was also WBA Super-Featherweight Champion twice. He has since stated his desire to move to 135 to face “Tank” Davis.
Premier Boxing Champions is hoping both names can lead to big viewership. Stay tuned as an announcement and date for the fight could be made over the next few weeks.
