Davis vs. Mares Close To Being Made For 2019
Gervonta Davis could be coming back to the ring in 2019 against Abner Mares.
According to a report by Mike Coppinger from Ring TV, Davis and Mares are set to fight for the WBA’s 130-pound world title in 2019. No venue or date has been settled, but the fight would more than likely take place either on FOX or on Showtime as both networks signed broadcast deals with PBC.
Davis has not fought since April when he defeated Jesus Cuellar to win the WBA “super” super featherweight title, but he has been feuding with Mares on social media for months. A mock fight poster was tweeted by Floyd Mayweather, Davis’ promoter, hinting that the fight was happening sometime in 2018, but no official fight announcement came.

The undefeated Davis previously held the IBF super featherweight title but was stripped of the belt in 2017 when he missed weight for an August title defense.
Mares has the opportunity to become the 18th man in boxing history to win a major world title in four different weight classes. Mares, who has held titles at bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight, is coming off a loss to WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz back in June.
