DAZN Holds Canelo’s Next Fight In Their Hands
As reported last week, DAZN Executive Chairman John Skipper has made it clear that the digital platform has approved of only two opponents for Canelo Alvarez’ scheduled September 14th return.
Boxing Scene, who first reported the story, confirmed on Monday that only Gennadiy Golovkin and WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev are approved by Skipper and DAZN to face Alvarez in the next fight of his $365 million dollar deal with the network.
While those are the two “approved” options, the idea of WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade, has not been completely thrown out.
“Golovkin and Kovalev are approved,” a source told Boxing Scene on Monday. “As for Demetrius Andrade, we aren’t at that point yet.”
With potential opponent Callum Smith’s team ruling him out until December for a fight against Alvarez and fellow Golden Boy/Mexican fighter Jaime Munguia being ruled out by DAZN, the unified middleweight champion may have to bend to one of two likely scenarios.
The first option would be paying Kovalev a lofty purse to not only take this level of fight on two months notice, and pay mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde a major step aside fee and a guarantee that the British boxer gets a crack at the winner of Alvarez’ light heavyweight debut.
The other option would be revisiting the Golovkin trilogy and placating GGG’s desire to not have third fight in Las Vegas, due to their highly controversial 2017 draw, and his first loss coming by way of the judge’s scorecards in their 2018 rematch.
“The ball is in Golden Boy’s court,” stated the source.
