DAZN Releases Canelo Alvarez-Gennadiy Golovkin III PPV Buys After ‘Disappointing’ Reports

The number of pay-per-view buys for Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin’s trilogy fight are out and to describe it in one word it was: disappointing.

That’s at least according to boxing journalist Dan Rafael who reported that the main event fight in Las Vegas generated between 550,000 to 575,000 pay-per-view buys in the United States. One source told Rafael that the final number could reach 600,000.

But DAZN – who put on the PPV event – countered the circulating report by releasing the numbers.

“DAZN Group has confirmed the Canelo vs. GGG III fight night saw a global audience in the millions. More than 1.06 million buys generated worldwide, including PPV and DAZN subscriptions,” DAZN said in a statement to World Boxing News.

Still, the number is lower in comparison to Alvarez and Golovkin’s first fight that ended in a draw in 2017, which brought in 1.3 million buys. The rematch in the following year, where Alvarez won by majority decision, generated 1.1 million buys.

Also according to DAZN’s numbers, that means that more than half of the worldwide buys of the event was in the U.S.

Sources told Rafael that DAZN had to generate 600,000 in PPV buys to break even, given that there was a combined $75 million guaranteed payday to the fighters.

In the U.S., the trilogy bout cost $64.99 for DAZN subscribers while new viewers had to pay $84.99 — $19.99 was a one-month subscription to the app.

Rafael estimated that 200,000 non-subscribers made the purchase.

“Canelo vs GGG 3 is also the number two biggest boxing event in the United States since its 2018 launch.

“Moreover, DAZN was once again the most downloaded sports app in the world. In addition to being the highest-grossing app of any category in the United States,” they added.

Alvarez retained his undisputed super middleweight title by unanimous decision, but fans have argued that it was much less action-packed than the previous two fights. Alvarez controlled a majority of the fight while Golovkin got a late start. Still, it wasn’t enough to pull the upset against Alvarez.
