De La Hoya And Canelo Nearly Clash At Munguia Presser

Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez nearly came to blows at the final presser for the Jamie Munguia bout.

Canelo puts his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title on the line this Saturday against the undefeated Munguia. De La Hoya represents Munguia, making it natural for the Golden Boy promoter to back his fighter. However, the presser was dominated by Canelo and De La Hoya’s poor relationship.

Alvarez has been on bad terms since he left Golden Boy, accusing De La Hoya of hypocrisy and disloyalty. De La Hoya has said previously that their relationship had gone sour when he questioned Canelo’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso’s skills. De La Hoya took to the stage, reminding Canelo that Golden Boy built his career. During their time together, Canelo secured the Floyd Mayweather fight and earned over $100 million. De La Hoya also called out Canelo’s previous failed tests.

“He seems to have trouble remembering who helped him become a true global star. To be clear, I have nothing but respect for Canelo as a fighter. His record and ability speak for themselves. But he has spent much of the last two months insulting me rather than promoting this fight,” De La Hoya said

Alvarez had a few words of his own. He alleged De La Hoya was trying to steal money from him for the GGG bout. De La Hoya responded by telling Alvarez to focus on his fight. The bad blood continued as both men almost squared up to each other. Once the dust settled, Canelo and De La Hoya admitted they were ready to throw punches.

“I was ready, clenched fists and all. Obviously, he’s not going to do anything. He’s got a fight Saturday. He can’t take the truth. A fighter like that can’t have me around because the attention is diverted off him. He hates that. I know how to get under his skin,” De La Hoya stated

“He insulted me and I don’t want to permit that. I will [punch him]. If he came closer, I punch him. He’s a f****** a**hole. If he came really close to me,. I’d punch him in that situation,” Canelo revealed
