De La Hoya Claims All Mexicans Want Canelo To KO GGG

Following the announcement of their highly anticipated rematch, Canelo Alvarez’ promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, claims all of Mexico is hoping Alvarez knocks out Gennady Golovkin.

Nearly a year to the day that their controversial draw, Alvarez and Golovkin will square off on September 15th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main source of friction between both fighters is over Alvarez testing positive twice for clenbuterol, a banned substance. Even though Alvarez claimed the failures were due to tainted Mexican meat, he would be suspended for six months and have his scheduled May 5th fight with Golovkin postponed.

While Golovkin and his team believe that Alvarez has sullied his name in the sport, De La Hoya disagrees, claiming Alvarez is bigger than ever in his native Mexico.

“Right now in Mexico, Canelo is bigger and more popular than ever because clenbuterol is the normal thing there,” De La Hoya said to Albert Perez.

“There are no regulations, so when you eat meat you will have clenbuterol in your system. The whole country wants him to knock out GGG.”

In regards to the financial logjam the two sides were in, De La Hoya defended his fighter wanting to make more, as he is the A-side of the fight.

“Canelo wanted a bigger piece of the purse for obvious reasons. He is the star and the main attraction. He can fight twice and get the same amount of money he would have won in a bout against Golovkin. However, Golovkin would have to fight like 15 times to get what he would get against Canelo,” De La Hoya said.
