De La Hoya Open To Talks With Shakur Stevenson After Free Agency

Oscar De La Hoya is willing to speak with Shakur Stevenson following his free agency.

Stevenson had his last fight with Top Rank, beating Artem Harutyunyan to retain his WBC Lightweight Belt. It was a comfortable win. However, he failed to stop Artem, with a few jeers coming from the crowd. Some fans also walked out of the arena before the final round. Shakur has rejected a $15 million deal from Top Rank for five fights.

“Yeah, it’s not chump change. But I know my worth and I know who I am now. I understand my value, from when I first signed with them to now – it’s a lot higher.  It wouldn’t be hard [to get the big fights] if had committed back to signing with Top Rank. The fights didn’t happen because I didn’t re-sign with Top Rank,” Stevenson stated

That has left him open to speaking with other promoters. De La Hoya witnessed his boxer William Zepeda defeat Giovanni Cabrera in a third-round stoppage. The win took Zepeda’s record to 31-0. Zepeda was mentioned as a possible opponent before Shakur faced Artem. Following Shakur’s free agency, Oscar has now reached out.

“I think this win for Zepeda was excellent and now we go for the world title. Shakur, give me a call. I would love to make a call with you. He made a statement. When you’re the #1 contender in every organization, you have to make a statement like that, and that’s exactly what he did,” De La Hoya said
