De La Hoya Picks Cruz To Stop Rolly, Eyes Garcia Fight Next

Oscar De La Hoya has backed Isaac Cruz to beat Rolando Romero, as the Mexican could face Ryan Garcia if he wins.

Romero was in talks to face Garcia only to pull out and sign a deal with Cruz. The fight takes place on March 30 on the Keith Thurman vs Tim Tszyu card. Both fighters are experienced in fighting on a big stage. They headlined against Gervonta Davis, but both came up short. Romero was stopped in the sixth round, but Cruz went the distance, impressing in his defeat. His front-foot aggressive style was praised, with De La Hoya believing that would pay off against Romero.

“It’s definitely going to be Pitbull, absolutely. He’ll probably knock him out. Yeah, they’ll both weigh in at 140 pounds. Pitbull is one hell of a pressure fighter, but Ryan fighting Rolly? We’ll see if Pitbull merits the opportunity,” De La Hoya said

Romero and Leonard Ellerbe have also found themselves in hot water after Rolly contradicted Ellerbe’s comments about De La Hoya’s offer for the Garcia fight. De La Hoya accused Romero of pricing himself out. Rolly hit back, claiming De La Hoya was trying to make the Cruz fight behind his back. Ellerbe was vocal about the offer not being good enough and Romero initially claimed Al Haymon provided a better deal.

“Well, he got a s****y offer from that other situation [Golden Boy], so this is actually the better fight. Timing is everything and it’s all about Rolly defending his title in a huge fight, first fight on Amazon Prime. Can’t wait to see him knock Pitbull out,” Ellerbe stated

But Romero’s following comments showed De La Hoya made a better offer, as the Golden Boy promoter hit back.

“I decided to take a much more difficult fight than Ryan Garcia for less money,” Romero revealed
