De La Hoya Says Garcia Vs. Ramirez Is Close; Ryan Says No

Ryan Garcia is now close to signing a fight with Jose Ramirez after talks over a Rolando Romero fight broke down.

That is according to Oscar De La Hoya. The news is a blow to Garcia after he decided to pull out of negotiations with Devin Haney for the Romero fight. Garcia justified the decision by calling it the best business move. The perception was that facing Romero gave Garcia a possible world title, with a less risky fight and a bigger purse. That would then give him more leverage for a unification with Haney. But De La Hoya has now stated Romero demanded too much money, no longer making the fight possible.

This will allow Garcia to improve his skills at 140, having only had one fight with his new trainer, Derrick James, against Oscar Duarte. Garcia can get more experience before facing a big name. Ramirez reportedly rejected an offer to fight Teofimo Lopez during Super Bowl Week. His record is 28-1, with 18 knockouts. His only defeat came from Josh Taylor. Ramirez’s biggest wins are over Jose Pedraza and Richard Commey. But he has only fought once a year in the last four years.

The choice of opponent did not sit well with Garcia, who dismissed it as a viable option, as Devin Haney fired back.
