Oscar De La Hoya launched a verbal attack on Rick Mirigian, the manager of Vergil Ortiz Jr. (24-0, 22 KOs).
De La Hoya’s comments follow after a Nevada judge recently ruled in favor of Golden Boy, effectively freezing Ortiz’s career while a multi-million dollar legal dispute plays out in arbitration. Central to the dispute was the belief by Team Ortiz that their contract expired when Golden Boy’s previous deal with DAZN ended in December 2025. However, the March 24 announcement of a new multi-year extension between Golden Boy and DAZN has reportedly closed that loophole.
Golden Boy Promotions is seeking $10 million in damages from Mirigian, alleging that the manager interfered with Ortiz’s contract by trying to “shop” him to rival promoters like Matchroom Boxing and Zuffa Boxing. De La Hoya claimed that Mirigian’s advice has “ruined” Ortiz’s career and a fight with Jaron Ennis, who has now moved on.
“Rick is suddenly blowing me up and begging me to call him back and fix this. You convinced my fighter to sue me to get out of his contract. Now Vergil’s career is [messed up] because of your greedy terrible advice. The time to talk it out is done. Now all you have to show for it is nasty legal bills…I will never work with Rick Mirigian ever again, and fighters need to beware,” De La Hoya said
