De La Hoya Vows To Continue Working With Ryan Garcia

Oscar De La Hoya remains confident that he will be Ryan Garcia’s promoter for the foreseeable future following his stoppage win over Oscar Duarte.

Garcia did not let his differences with his promoter impact the performance as he dropped Duarte in the eighth round with a flurry of punches, which was set up by a left hook to the temple. The win was the first under Derrick James, which was vital given Garcia’s war of words with De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins. The boxer reacted strongly after Hopkins suggested that Garcia may not box if he did not come through his fight with Duarte. De La Hoya defended the comments on the grounds they had been taken out of context, something which Garcia rejected as he hit back in the pre-fight presser with Duarte. The win has naturally put Garcia in a position to possibly fight for a world title moving forward. However, for now, De La Hoya expected the pair to work together.

“I don’t know [who he fights next]. I haven’t even thought about it. We’ll have to go back to the drawing board. As his promoter for many years to come, we’ll figure it out and figure out a plan. Then we’ll go back to the drawing board. I’m proud of him, man. I’m proud of every fighter,” De La Hoya

Garcia called out Rolando Romero for a unification fight at 140 in his post-fight comments. The latter is the current WBA champion after having beaten Ismael Barroso to win the vacant title. The champion had been calling out Garcia ever since 2017. However, since then, both fighters have headlined major PPV events. Romero and Garcia both fell short to Gervonta Davis in big events. However, Garcia could get his title shot in the future.
