De La Hoya Will Make Garcia Vs. Romero; De La Hoya Lashes Out At Mayweather

Oscar De La Hoya is now working to make Ryan Garcia vs Rolando Romero following the collapse of the Devin Haney fight.

Garcia pulled out of negotiations for the Haney fight after initially instructing De La Hoya to make it happen. Garcia indicated his intention to face Haney after The Dream beat Regis Prograis to became the WBC junior welterweight champion. Garcia changed his mind, claiming it was better business to face Romero for his WBA junior welterweight belt. This move came after Garcia was seen with Floyd Mayweather Jr. This fight will still give Garcia a world title shot but likely earn him more money for an easier fight. Now De La Hoya is behind his fighter’s decision.

“Golden Boy has worked with Ryan Garcia since he turned pro, and together have made him the biggest draw in boxing. We will make his fight with Rolly into a huge event, as we always do,” De La Hoya said

The fight with Haney is still possible if Garcia comes out victorious. It becomes much bigger as it would be a unification. But with Garcia’s contract reportedly up within a year, De La Hoya knows he must do his best to keep Garcia on his side.

Garcia is in a legal battle with his promoter after claiming his contract was breached, and a lawsuit is ongoing. Following Garcia’s interactions with Mayweather, there is increasing speculation that he could sign with PBC. That has caused De La Hoya to respond as he warned Mayweather over approaching his fighter.

“Floyd, if you want to give Ryan the secret to defence in the ring, that’s great. “Other than that, if you are still a promoter like it says here, f*** off,” De La Hoya stated
