Demetrious Johnson Credits Consistency As Source Of Pride In His MMA Career

It was revealed this past weekend at UFC Seattle that Demetrious Johnson will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame this year, and backstage he touched on what he is most proud of in his career.

‘Mighty Mouse’ is widely considered one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, and even if you don’t think he’s the best, you can’t have the conversation without his name being mentioned. Johnson competed in the UFC between 2011 and 2018, amassing a record of 15-2. Between 2012 and 2017, he held the flyweight belt and defended it eleven times before his meeting with Henry Cejudo.

After his time with the UFC, Johnson joined the ranks of ONE Championship, where he went 5-1 with the promotion and retired as the bantamweight titleholder. While Johnson’s time in MMA is now over, he is not done with active combat sports competition, and competes in Jiu-Jitsu regularly in the black belt division of the IBJJF.

Despite the long list of achievements in his career, Johnson revealed that through it all, it was simply his consistency that he is most proud of. Through a 30-fight career, Johnson never missed weight, never failed a drug test, and showed off his raw skill in each and every one of his outings.

“Just my consistency (is the best part of my career),” Johnson said. “Making weight, passing every drug test, defending the belt. Just being consistent every single night I stepped inside that octagon. I think a lot of people don’t realize, I think it was said by Matt Hughes, but it’s easy to become a champion and stay a champion and be consistent.

“Now when you look at it, it’s maybe two, three, four consecutive title defenses. Obviously there’s more things about that because everyone wants to be a double champ or triple champ and all that stuff. But to be consistent every single night when I competed is probably one thing that’ll be close to my heart.”
