Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson On The State Of MMA Versus Boxing

Despite a massive year for the UFC, Demetrious Johnson feels that boxing was the more entertaining sport to watch so far this year.

Johnson currently holds the 135-pound ONE Championship belt, and is most well known for being the inaugural UFC flyweight titleholder. To this day, “Mighty Mouse” is considered one of the best to ever compete.

Between his fights with ONE, and more recently his competitive Jiu Jitsu ventures with the IBJJF, Johnson is often sharing his fight game related opinions on his YouTube channel. In his most recent video, posted earlier this week, he explained why he feels boxing is more interesting than MMA ‘right now’.

“Right now, I feel like boxing is more exciting than mixed martial arts.” Demetrious Johnson stated in the video uploaded to his YouTube channel. “I mean, there are points in time when mixed martial arts is having it’s peaks. But right now, you just had Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia just popped. We’ll talk about that a little later. Then you had Francis Ngannou, who got knocked out by Anthony Joshua.”

He continued, “Then you just had the beautiful Tyson Fury and [Oleksandr] Usyk [fight]. He just beat him and became the heavyweight champion. That fight was absolutely amazing. From round one, to round twelve, I was on the edge of my seat. Right now, we’re sitting here waiting in the MMA world. We’ve got a few things going on over in ONE Championship… But right now, I think the story we’re waiting for is Islam [Makhachev] vs. Dustin Poirier.”

Despite the excitement the boxing world has provided, the entertainment on display from such events as UFC 300 cannot be overlooked. Max Holloway’s knockout over Justin Gaethje for the BMF title alone is one of the most electrifying combat sports moments to ever occur, and many seem to disagree with Johnson based on instances like these throughout 2024.
