Demetrius Andrade Says He’d Take Less Pay To Fight Billy Joe Saunders
Demetrius Andrade claims he’s willing to take a pay cut to share the ring with Billy Joe Saunders.
Andrade is the WBO Middleweight Champion. Saunders also holds WBO gold but at super-middleweight. Andrade has made it clear that he’s looking for big names. For about two years now, Andrade and Saunders have been going back-and-forth. Andrade has poked fun at Saunders’ positive drug test in 2018.
During an appearance on the SI Boxing Podcast with Chris Mannix, Andrade explained why he’d take less money to throw down with Saunders (via BoxingScene.com).
“This is what I’m willing to do. I’m willing to take less money – the same amount of money to fight [mandatory] Liam Williams – I would take that money to fight Billy Joe Saunders, just to show him, ‘This is what I want, this is what I deserve, this is what is going to take.’ Everybody – DAZN, Matchroom, Me, WBO – we’re going to take it to another level now. That’s what I’m trying to do. Win, lose, or draw.”
Andrade last competed back on January 30. There were plans for him to fight once more before the conclusion of 2020 but there were issues locking down an opponent. Andrade has a perfect pro boxing record of 29-0 and he hopes for a battle of the unbeatens against Saunders, who is 30-0.
Saunders is fresh off a successful title defense over Martin Murray. Saunders was dominant throughout the 12 rounds of action and earned the unanimous decision victory. Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn is working on a two-fight deal with Canelo Alvarez that would have the Mexican star fight Avni Yildirim and Saunders in 2021, so Andrade may have to keep waiting.
