Dern Signs For UFC 224 In Rio

Following a win in her UFC debut at UFC 222, Mackenzie Dern will make the quick turnaround for her second time in the Octagon, as she has signed for UFC 224 in Rio.

This event will be significant for Dern, as she grew up splitting time between the United States and Brazil, which is where her father, Wellington Dias, a legendary BJJ grappler is originally from.

Dern, who beat Ashley Yoder in her debut via split decision, is looking to make a more forceful statement against veteran Amanda Cooper. Cooper is an even 2-2 inside the Octagon and has been looking forward for an opportunity to take on the standout grappler for quite some time.

“I’ve been waiting for this fight from the moment I heard her name,” Cooper wrote on Instagram. “I’ve been training for this fight, I’ve been training for McKenzie and I’ve been training to beat her longer than you can imagine. I’m going to derail the hype train on May 12th.”

Leading up to UFC 222, the hype was building for Dern, who would be featured by the UFC on fight week, as she debuted on the preliminary card for the event in Las Vegas.

UFC 224 is set to have the women’s bantamweight title fight as  Amanda Nunes will stand across top contender Raquel Pennington.
