It has been decided in court that the legal guardianship of Tommy Hearns will be placed in the hands of his son, Ronald, indefinitely.
The boxing legend recently underwent successful hip replacement surgery, but is struggling given his ongoing battle with dementia.
As Ronald Hearns was granted guardianship, he will now have full control over his father’s personal and financial decisions. Conservatorship is a similar situation, but typically pertains strictly to financial decisions, while guardianship encompasses essentially all decisions and is usually placed with a family member.
Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012. He competed professionally from 1977 to 2006, and was the first boxer to earn world titles in five different weight divisions.
