Devin Haney Assesses Teofimo Lopez’s Win Over Vasiliy Lomachenko
Devin Haney has weighed in on Teofimo Lopez’s unanimous decision win over Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Lopez and Lomachenko competed in the main event of a Top Rank Boxing card on October 17. The bout was contested for the WBA (Super), WBC (Franchise), IBF, and WBO Lightweight Titles. Lopez scored the upset win via unanimous decision.
During an interview with Fight Hub, Haney shared his thoughts on Lomachenko’s defeat (h/t Bad Left Hook).
“I was surprised with what Loma didn’t do. To be honest I thought Loma was gonna win the fight. But I was surprised with how he waited so long to throw any punches, really…I take nothing away from Teofimo and what he did, because he went in there and got the win. You can’t knock him for what Loma did. But it was a lot of what Loma didn’t do, you know, Teofimo was staying busy and he hit Loma with good shots but Loma didn’t do anything for seven rounds. How can you win a fight like that?!”
Haney went on to say that he doesn’t think Lomachenko is using his injured shoulder as an excuse. He believes that Lomachenko takes his losses the same way he takes his victories.
Haney is gearing up for a WBC Title defense against Yuriorkis Gamboa on November 7. This will be Haney’s second title defense. Up to this point, Haney has amassed a pro boxing record of 24-0. He’s scored 15 knockouts along the way. Gamboa is coming off a 12th-round TKO loss to Gevonta Davis back in December 2019.
