Devin Haney Declared New Undisputed Champion
Devin Haney always had the intention of flying out to Australia and battling George Kambosos Jr. for the undisputed lightweight championship. This decision became beneficial as their fight took place on Saturday.
With the crowd firmly behind Kambosos Jr., the 23-year-old didn’t feel intimidated. The American fighter dominated the local native across 12 rounds to become the holder of all four world championships at 135 pounds.
Haney has become the ninth fighter to land all four world championships in a specific weight class and the second youngest fighter to achieve that at the age of 23.
Despite the crowd getting into it, there was no drama during the fight as the American fighter straight away executed a brilliant jab to put his opponent on the backfoot. The weight of that jab was so strong that Kambosos Jr. was never able to get his offensive skills going.
With a couple of right hands from Haney, the 28-year-old completely wilted. In the end, the American was declared the winner with a scoreline of 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110.
“The biggest thing was me caging him right from the start. He wanted to land an overhand right and a big left hook, but I was always one step ahead of him,” Haney stated.
