Devin Haney Downplays Needing Teofimo Lopez To Become A Star
WBC Lightweight Champion Devin Haney insists he doesn’t need Teofimo Lopez on his road to stardom.
Haney has made it clear that he feels a lack of respect despite his undefeated record and two successful title defenses. Many have been calling for Haney to fight a top-tier 135-pounder. At the moment, Haney’s next fight will likely be against Jorge Linares.
Haney and Lopez, who holds five titles at lightweight, have been trading barbs on social media. Lopez has said that “The Dream” needs to have a big win before the two can fight.
During an interview with Behind The Gloves, Haney said he doesn’t need the bout with Lopez to be established (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“Lopez said I have to fight Rolly [Rolando Romero] to get him when I don’t need Teofimo to become a star. Teofimo is not someone that I need. I still make more money than fighting Teofimo Lopez. For him to say that I have to go through Rolly to get to you is ridiculous. I don’t really need you, Teofimo.
“My main focus is to keep winning and collect all of the belts in my division. Fame will come, the money will come in good time. I want belts more than anything.”
Haney’s last outing took place back in November. He earned a unanimous decision victory over Yuriorkis Gamboa.
Lopez was last seen in action back in October. He defeated Vasiliy Lomachenko via unanimous decision to capture the WBA (Super), WBO, The Ring, and WBC (Franchise) Lightweight Titles. Lopez was already the IBF titleholder going into the bout.
