Devin Haney: I Am The Best Boxer In The Lightweight Division
Devin Haney believes he is the gold standard of boxing’s lightweight division.
Haney is the WBC Lightweight Champion. He is fresh off a one-sided performance against Yuriorkis Gamboa. Haney successfully defended his gold via unanimous decision. This was his second title defense.
Following his win over Gamboa, Haney made a bold statement. He expressed his belief that no one can touch him in the lightweight division (via BoxingScene.com).
“I am the best boxer in the lightweight division, Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez are good fighters, but I’m special. My skill set is on another level and they all know it. I’m the best. Everyone else is talking a good game until it is time to sign the contract to fight me. All I do is dominate!”
With the victory over Gamboa, Haney improved his perfect pro boxing record to 25-0. Many have been clamoring for Haney to fight elite-level competition such as Lopez and Davis. The politics of boxing may put a damper on that hope, at least for the time being.
Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum has said he isn’t interested in booking Haney against Lopez because he feels Haney doesn’t have drawing ability. As for Davis, he’s under Mayweather Promotions and Floyd Mayweather has said he wouldn’t put “Tank” on the DAZN platform because he still believes in the pay-per-view model. Haney’s fights are broadcast on DAZN.
Time will tell if Haney will be able to get the fights that fans want to see. Time is on Haney’s side as he’s only 21 years old.
