Devin Haney Might Pass On George Kambosos Jr Rematch
A rematch with George Kambosos Jr might not be on the to-do list for Devin Haney.
The undisputed lightweight champion said he wants to look at other options before choosing a rematch with Kambosos, who the American defeated by unanimous decision last month.
“We’ve got to see what’s next. We don’t know…We’re weighing our options, possible, possibly not. We got to see what makes the most sense for me and my team…,” Haney told Fight Hype.
“October I will be fighting, but we don’t know yet…It just got to make sense for us to go back…”
Instead, when asked if he would fight Vasiliy Lomachenko, Haney said he was open to it.
“Of course I want to make the biggest fights happen, and I’ve been saying that for a while now…I’m standing on that…If it makes sense, the biggest fights, then lets do it,” he added.
Lomachenko, the former No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer and unified lightweight champion, hasn’t fought since his unanimous decision win over Richard Commey last December at Madison Square Garden.
It was his first fight since his upset decision loss to Teofimo Lopez in 2020.
Lomachenko was originally supposed to face Kambosos in Australia, but the Ukrainian boxer has been in his home country defending it from Russia’s ongoing invasion.
When news broke that unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk was leaving Ukraine to start training, Lomachenko’s team announced that he was staying back.
With that, Haney was given the opportunity to step in and fight Kambosos.
Top Rank President Todd DuBoef recently revealed that Lomachenko is targeting a return to the ring by October.
Even unified champion Shakur Stevenson hopes a Haney-Lomachenko matchup happens.
“Me and Devin is going to be a big fight when it happens. That’s a possibility. I’m not crossing that out, but I heard that Lomachenko expressed that he wants the belts,” Stevenson told Fighthype.
“I just hope they [Team Haney] finds something in that contract that gets them out of the rematch [with George Kambosos Jr]. Nobody wants to see that again. I disagree with people who think Devin had a boring performance. That’s a false narrative. I enjoyed this fight, actually.”
