Devin Haney To Teofimo Lopez: ‘You’re Not Undisputed’
Devin Haney makes it clear that he doesn’t view Teofimo Lopez as the undisputed lightweight king.
There has been a lot of confusion in regards to titles in boxing. The WBC, in particular, has taken the brunt of these criticisms. It didn’t help matters when WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman claimed that the winner of Teofimo Lopez vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko would be considered to be the undisputed lightweight champion. While Haney is the WBC Lightweight Champion, Lopez captured the WBC (Franchise) gold when he beat Lomachenko.
Lopez has considered himself to be the undisputed lightweight king and has even called Haney an “email champion.” Appearing on The Ak & Barak Show, Haney said that Lopez and Top Rank are trying to sell fight fans on a lie (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“I mean, you know, I think that he’s a good boxer. I do think that him and Top Rank are trying to brainwash the fans with this email thing, just putting out false information, you know, just to try to prove that he’s undisputed when in reality, he’s not because how can you be undisputed when your next opponent can’t fight for undisputed? So, you’re not undisputed. Your next opponent, if it’s not Devin Haney, cannot fight for undisputed unless they go petition for it, like he did. And petition for a franchise title, not undisputed.”
Haney is scheduled to defend his WBC gold against Yuriorkis Gamboa this Saturday night, November 7. Haney has said he wants to put on a stellar performance against the seasoned veteran. Gamboa is coming off a 12th-round TKO loss to Gervonta Davis.
Lopez will be on the sidelines for a little while. The WBA (Super), WBC (Franchise), IBF, and WBO Lightweight Champion is recovering from surgery on his right foot. He won’t be able to start rehabbing for another five or six weeks.
