Devin Haney Wants Teofimo Lopez Unification Bout, Then Gervonta Davis
Devin Haney is hoping to get a big title clash with Teofimo Lopez before going one-on-one with Gervonta Davis.
Haney is the WBC Lightweight Champion. Lopez holds the “Franchise” version of that title along with the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and The Ring gold. Both men have been going back-and-forth trading barbs and many are wondering if a clash is inevitable.
Appearing on The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer, Haney laid out his wishlist for 2021 and it includes “The Takeover” and “Tank” (via BoxingScene.com).
“My next [fight] will be Teofimo Lopez because that would be for all the belts of course and I would want to be undisputed champion of the lightweight division, and then I would say Gervonta Davis.
“I think Teofimo Lopez does want to fight me, I think Teofimo actually, really wants to fight me. Maybe he doesn’t really like me or whatever the case may be but I think he really does want to fight me. Ryan Garcia not so much.”
Haney has said that Lopez can’t consider himself the undisputed champion at lightweight until he fights him. Lopez has responded by calling Haney an “email champion.” Recently, Lopez appeared on The Ak & Barak Show and said he wants to fight Haney because “that kid’s pissing me off.”
Haney is coming off a successful title defense over Yuriorkis Gamboa. “The Dream” won the bout via unanimous decision. The victory improved his perfect pro boxing record to 25-0. Lopez’s last bout was his big multi-title win over Vasiliy Lomachenko.
As for Davis, he’s coming off a Knockout of the Year candidate against Leo Santa Cruz. The victory earned Davis the WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Title. He also holds the “Regular” version of the WBA Lightweight Title.
