Dillian Whyte vs. Luis Ortiz? Both Heavyweights Express Interest

We could be in for an intriguing tilt at heavyweight in Dillian Whyte vs. Luis Ortiz.

Whyte is due for a rematch with Alexander Povetkin for the interim WBC Heavyweight Championship. Povetkin took the title from Whyte back in August with his stunning fifth-round TKO finish. The rematch has been delayed, however, due to the fact that Povetkin is still recovering from COVID-19.

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn has said that if Povetkin isn’t ready by a certain timeframe, then Whyte could share the ring with Ortiz beforehand. Ortiz’s manager, Jay Jimenez, told Sky Sports that Ortiz is willing to take the fight with Whyte if he’s offered it.

“I guess Dillian was calling his name and other names, and he reached to me and asked me, ‘Look, if that’s true, I would like to step in the ring with him. That would be a great fight.’ I told him that I would find out. I think yeah, that would be a great fight. Luis Ortiz would love to take that fight. I say January, February [Ortiz could be ready].”

Ortiz is fresh off a 45-second knockout victory over Alexander Flores. It was Ortiz’s first bout since being knocked out by Deontay Wilder in their rematch back in November 2019.

At the age of 41, Ortiz is hoping to nab a major championship before his career wraps up. He will turn 42 in March. As for Whyte, he’s looking to prove that he can come back from his setback against Povetkin and move on to become a true heavyweight champion.
