Dina Thorslund Retains WBC And WBO Bantamweight Titles With An Eighth-Round TKO Victory Over Mary Romero

Dina Thorslund defended her WBC and WBO Bantamweight Belts with an eighth-round TKO win against Mary Romero.

Thorslund remained undefeated, taking her record to 21-0. The champion had only fought outside her country once, as she returned to the Royal Arena in Copenhagen. She was meant to face Seren Cetin, but the Turkish fighter pulled out after suffering a cut over her eye in sparring. Romero stepped in but she could not get the win.

Both fighters met in center as Thorslund pinned Romero on the ropes in a fast start. The champion set the pace as Romero responded with hopeful shots from range. Thorslund landed a strong body shot through Romero’s tight guard, taking the first.

The challenger was fighting on the back foot, but she did get through with a couple of right hands. Romero landed another right hand over the top as Thorslund became careless in a better round for Romero. But Thorslund connected with a right just before the bell.

Thorslund was in control, but Romero stayed in the fight, using her lateral movement to give the champion something to consider. The Dane backed Romero up on the ropes, landing a clubbing right hand to the body in the fourth. The former European Champion, Romero, was struggling with the intensity.

At the halfway stage, Thorslund had a clear lead. The champion continued her momentum in the sixth, landing more combinations on the ropes, leaving Romero to protest at an alleged use of the head. Romero did well to stay mobile, but it was simply a case of trying to go the distance.

But it was all over in the eighth. Thorslund landed an uppercut, landing on the nose/eye. Romero turned her back and was unable to defend herself. The referee stopped the fight, even with Romero’s desire to continue. Both fighters had done well, given Romero took the fight on short notice, while Thorslund did what she had to do, defending her belts with a stoppage win.

Hamza Hussein vs. Stefan Mihailov – Co-Main Event (Cruiserweight)

Hussein began swinging at will as he backed Mihailov on the ropes with his left hand. That was followed up by two strong body shots and a punch to the head as Mihailov struggled with the output in the first. The Serbian held on, but it was all one-way traffic. It was a similar story in the second. ‘The Assassin’ Hussein used his reach advantage to hit Mihailov, who was coming in and falling short with his punches.

With two rounds gone, Mihailov failed to land anything of note. The writing was on the wall as a huge left hand sent Mihailov to the floor in the third. Although he got up, Hussein connected with another left before the bell. Another chopping left connected in the fourth as Mihailov clung on. Mihailov’s eye was swelled up and was pouring with blood by the fifth. While he made it to the final bell, Hussein secured a dominant win on the scorecards: 60-53, 60-53, 60-53

Official Result: Hamza Hussein def. Stefan Mihailov via a unanimous decision: 60-53, 60-53, 60-53
