Doc Stoppage Gives McGeary TKO Win
One week after Bellator 172 had to go with a new main event at the last minute — as Matt Mitrione had to pull out from the original main event against Fedor Emelianenko — Bellator 173 suffered a similar fate. Liam McGeary may have gotten the win over Brett McDermott, but this wasn’t the plan.
The original headline bout for the event — held on Feb. 24 at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Island — was to see McGeary face off with Chris Fields. Four days before the event, however, it was announced Fields would be withdrawing due to injury. The original replacement opponent, Vladimir Filipovic, was also forced off the card due to visa issues. Fortunately for the promotion, McDermott stepped up and was able to fight.
And McDermott actually had some positive moments in his loss. McDermott pursued the former Bellator light heavyweight champion as soon as the opening bell rang, and he dropped McGeary with the fight barely underway. McGeary, however, recovered quickly, and landed a brutal knee midway through the round.

McDermott did recover, surviving every one of the former champion’s attempts at a finish.
McGeary landed a number of jobs in the opening minute of the second round, when the referee stopped the action and had the cageside doctor come in to check on McDermott. The doctor deemed McDermott could not continue, and McGeary earned a TKO win.
With this win, McGeary now faces Linton Vassell in London’s SSE Arena on May 19 at Bellator 179, the same card that features Michael Page vs. Derek Anderson and Paul Daley vs. Rory MacDonald.
