Documentary On UFC I To Be Released This Year

Following the UFC’s 25th- anniversary, and their own documentary on the origins of the organization, Sports Illustrated has announced their own look at the formation of the combat sports brand.

Unlike the UFC’s collection of subjects to celebrate the 25th anniversary, or the ESPN 30-For-30 podcast on the beginnings of the company, Sports Illustrated’s SI Films label will produce a feature-length documentary UFC 1: Origin Of The Octagon.

The John Mason Gordon directed film will feature interviews with former UFC announcer and football legend Jim Brown, Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Teila Tuli, Art Jimmerson, Gerard Gordeau, and more competitors and architects of the company.

“The origin stories of sports are often obscured behind layers of time and legend,” Gordon said Tuesday in a statement.

“We are thrilled to work with Sports Illustrated in telling the largely unknown stories of the creators, fighters, and executives who put everything on the line with success so unlikely. That it’s the origin of the UFC, a brand almost everyone knows, makes it an incredibly exciting documentary opportunity.”

The documentary has no release date yet, but may fall around the same time as the 26th anniversary of UFC I, which aired on November 12th, 1993.

The film will be distributed by IMG, who’s parent company WME-IMG purchased the UFC for $4 billion in 2016.
