Dos Santos Returns With A Win At UFC Boise

It’s been more than two years since Junior Dos Santos last won a fight in the UFC, but the former heavyweight champion is back on the path to fight for a title.

In his first fight in 2018, Dos Santos defeated Blagoy Ivanov via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45) in the main event of UFC Fight Night 133 in Boise, Idaho.

The fight ended up being a 25-minute boxing match between the two heavyweights. Dos Santos landed more significant strikes, including a number of key kicks to Ivanov. Though Ivanov was ready to trade blows with the former UFC heavyweight champion throughout the bout, Dos Santos’ overall better striking proved to be the difference maker.

It was the first win for Dos Santos since scoring a unanimous decision victory over Ben Rothwell at UFC Fight Night 86. Dos Santos has alternated wins and losses dating all the way back to 2012, losing his UFC heavyweight title to Cain Velazquez at UFC 146.

The card featured a number of recognizable names, including Sage Northcutt, Cat Zingano and Chad Mendes. Northcutt fought in the co-main event bout, taking on Zak Ottow in a welterweight bout. It was Northcutt’s third fight in the UFC as a welterweight, but Northcutt would get his first UFC welterweight victory when he stopped Ottow a little more than halfway through the second round.

Mendes, fighting for the first time since the end of 2015 after serving a two-year drug suspension, also scored a TKO victory, this time being a first-round TKO victory over Myles Jury to end Mendes two-fight losing streak. Mendes, a former featherweight title challenger gets his first win since April 2015 when he also knocked out Ricardo Lamas.

Zingano dominated Marion Reneau en route to a unanimous decision win, sweep all three rounds on all three judges’ scorecards. Zingano was highly successful in landing leg kicks taking down the overmatched Reneau, ending Zingano’s three-fight losing streak.

But perhaps the most impressive victory came in Niko Price’s victory over Randy Brown. In the second round of his fight, Price was on the ground, but somehow managed to bring consecutive hammer fists to knock Brown out cold.

Raoni Barcelos defeated Kurt Holobaugh via TKO, round 3 (1:29)

Liz Carmouche defeated Jennifer Maia via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Mark De La Rosa defeated Elias Garcia via submission (rear-naked choke), round 2 (2:00)
