Dos Santos vs. Struve Headlines UFC: Halifax
A heavyweight rematch of a forgotten 2009 bout will headline the UFC’s return to Halifax, Canada. Former heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos will fight Stefan Struve in the main event of the Feb. 19 card.
When the two fighters met at UFC 95 in 2009, Dos Santos ran through Struve and finished the tallest man in the UFC in under one minute. He went on to capture the heavyweight title after five more victories.
Dos Santos last fought in April, where he put on a striking clinic against an outmatched Ben Rothwell on the way to a unanimous decision victory. It was the rebound that the Brazilian needed, as he had previously been knocked out by Alistair Overeem in December.
Struve has looked better than ever in his last two performances, beating Antonio Silva and Daniel Omielanczuk in 2016. If he can avenge his loss to Dos Santos then he will push himself into the top echelon of the heavyweight division and potentially into title contention.
It is worth noting — both Struve and Dos Santos hold victories over the current heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. Struve finished Miocic with a second-round TKO in 2012 and Dos Santos beat him by unanimous decision in 2014 classic.
Fortunes can change quickly in the heavyweight division.
