Doumbe-Groenhart III Headlines GLORY 70

Someone will come away with bragging rights and the GLORY welterweight championship once and for all when champion Cedric Doumbe and Murthel Groenhart meet in the main event of GLORY 70 on October 26.

The two originally met back at GLORY 28 in Doumbe’s home country of France in March 2016. Despite being an unknown at the time, Doumbe managed to pull off a shocker and score a unanimous decision win over Groenhart.

This marked the start of a 12-fight win streak in the sport for Doumbe, and in his next GLORY bout at GLORY: Collision in December, he pulled off another big win over Nieky Holzken to win the GLORY welterweight championship.

Groenhart, meanwhile, went on to win four of his next five, including a welterweight contender tournament at GLORY 31, for a shot at Holzken prior to Doumbe’s that same year. Unfortunately for him, he lost to Holzken by unanimous decision at GLORY 34.

After three consecutive wins in 2017, however, Groenhart got another title shot and another crack at Doumbe at GLORY 44 in August 2017, where he’d score a split decision to win the title. Groenhart, however, dropped the belt in his first defense against Harut Grigorian at GLORY 50.

Doumbe then won three straight fights before winning the title back from Grigorian at GLORY 64. On that same card, Groenhart was defeated by Alim Nabiev, who’d go on to fall short in his own title shot against Doumbe at GLORY 66 in June.
