Du Plessis And Adesanya Stare Each Other Down

Dricus du Plessis and Israel Adesanya faced off for the first time as they will take each other on at UFC 305 on August 17.

Du Plessis defends his UFC Middleweight Title in his first defense since beating Sean Strickland at UFC 297. The fight was close with some feeling Strickland was deprived of a win. Adesanya is having his first fight since losing to Strickland at UFC 293. The defeat meant he was no longer the middleweight champion as he took a break from the UFC. This fight was close for last year. Du Plessis’ win over Robert Whittaker meant Izzy had to beat Strickland.

The Strickland loss derailed those plans. Now, the fight has been agreed, there was plenty of bad blood. Adesanya called out Du Plessis’ comments about becoming the first African to bring the belts ‘back’. Adesanya lives in New Zealand, but was born in Nigeria, which Du Plessis has been using to get under his opponent’s skin. During their face-off, both refused to break eye contact before they were separated.

“Again, he tried to discredit the Three Kings and say that he’s the real true African champion. And I was just, like, it’s a weird mindset, bro. Like he came in the UFC, I knew who he was a little bit, but I didn’t go, ‘Oh, who the f**k is this fake dude coming in?’ I just said, ‘Cool, he’s another African in the UFC. But then him discrediting me, Francis Ngannou, and Kamaru Usman, that ticked me off a little bit. So that’s what started this. But again, I’ll finish it,” Adesanya

‘I get into the Octagon, and I do my job. I do my business. You can be the biggest a** ***e in the world, you can be the nicest guy in the world, I’m going out there to kill you and I hope you’re doing the same to me because otherwise it’s not going to be a good night for you. As far as discrediting, I’ve never discredited anybody. Stating fact, where do I reside? What’s my postal code? Where do I train? Where do I live? Where was I born? In South Africa. I’m still there, still training and I won this belt from South Africa. Quite frankly I don’t care how it rubbed him off the wrong way, I don’t care,” Du Plessis
