DuBoef: Brook-Crawford A Possibility
Looking to get back to championship glory, Kell Brook is hoping for a bout with WBO Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford. If talks go well, that may end up becoming a reality.
Top Rank President Todd DuBoef spoke to Sky Sports about a potential clash between Crawford (36-0) and the former IBF Welterweight Champion in Brook (39-2). The 34-year-old Brook has been in contact with Top Rank’s Bob Arum about a clash between the two. DuBoef went on to say that talks are currently ongoing, but it is unknown how much traction it will get.
“A couple of months ago, in February, there was a lot of chatter about Kell Brook, and Crawford says ‘I’ll go up in weight, he can come down, I don’t care. I’ll take care of him. I want to fight him.’
“Kell and his team have reached out to us, and I think we were going to – representatives of Top Rank were going to be meeting with him in New York for those March events,” DuBoef stated.
After more than a year away from the ring due to injury, Brook returned to action back in February, beating Mark DeLuca via TKO. It was the 27th win for “Speak K” via some form of knockout. After winning the IBF belt from Shawn Porter in 2014, he defended it three times. Brook tried his luck at middleweight and lost to Gennadiy Golovkin in 2016 via TKO. He then lost the IBF belt to Errol Spence Jr. via knockout a few months later. Those two fights were one of the main causes for his absence.
Crawford won the WBO belt from Jeff Horn in 2018. He has defended it twice, last beating Egidijus Kavaliauskas inside Madison Square Garden in December. Crawford has also held the WBC, WBO, and lineal Light-Welterweight Titles.
Arum has been eyeing a Crawford-Pacquaio bout. If the Senator of the Philippines is unavailable, Brook could be the one to get a shot at Crawford. DuBoef is currently looking at all the options on the table.
“We’re in a pause right now. Terence is a very, very special fighter,” DuBoef went on to say. “Probably pound-for-pound one or two on everybody’s list, in a great division. People have talked about him and Errol Spence, people have talked about him and Pacquiao, so he has lots of matches to be made.”
