Dubois Survives Knockdowns To Become WBO Heavyweight Champ

Daniel Dubois (23-3) got off the canvas twice to stop Fabio Wardley (20-1-1) in the 11th round to claim the latter’s WBO heavyweight title.

The result means Dubois is now a two-time heavyweight champion, while Wardley suffered his first loss. The fight exploded into life within seconds. Wardley dropped Dubois with a right hand just 15 seconds into round 1. Dubois managed to beat the count and survived the round.

By round 2, the tide began to turn. Dubois found his range, popping Wardley with jabs and counter-rights that momentarily knocked the champion off balance. However, Wardley connected with another overhand right in the third to send Dubois down for the second time.

Despite the two early knockdowns, Dubois showed his toughness. From round 4 through round 6, Dubois used his double jab and combinations that left Wardley’s nose bloodied and his face heavily marked. The momentum had shifted entirely. Dubois was landing power shots at will.

Despite being inspected by the ringside doctor in round nine, Wardley continued and fired back with an uppercut that briefly halted Dubois’ momentum. The punishment finally took its toll. Early in round 11, a right hand from Dubois sent Wardley stumbling again. The referee stepped in to stop the fight. In his post-fight comments, Frank Warren confirmed Wardley has a rematch clause.
